PADDLE HARD NO. 5

1.00

Paddle Hard No. 5 is a new style on an old design. As with all of my art, it is built from recycled metal and other found objects. Paddle Hard No. 5 is another surfboard with an industrial feel and polished refinement. The look of this longboard is a design used on the original Paddle Hard No.1 but taken to another level. The stringer and fin are a collaboration with artist/painter Chris Harsh who, besides painting the unbelievable colors, clear coated the entire piece to make it the most wet looking finish possible.

Using 475 recycled long (13”) spool bolts to create this realistic dimensioned longboard was the first challenge. I wanted it to be denser and tighter than Paddle Hard No. 1. Another challenge I faced was that I tried not to cut or bend the interior bolts during construction. A few had to be modified, but most are full length and accentuate the board with a flowing style. As with most of my work, I have attempted to hide most of the welds to present a clean and sharp appearance. The fin was hand ground from one solid piece of steel to the actual shape of a real fin. The base is a 25” diamond-bit saw blade that had served out its life on the end of a giant tile saw. It now gets to support this structure for the next 100+ years.

Special thanks to Chris Harsh for his talent and collaboration on this board.
“You helped take this board to the next level.”
