PADDLE HARD NO. 2
Paddle Hard No. 2 is the only one of its kind, and it’s obvious that one would have to “paddle hard” to catch a wave on this 9-foot surfboard made out of recycled wine barrel staves. It is modeled after the true dimensions of my real surfboard. Each of its 34 wine-stained staves is uniquely different from one another in size and shape. Therefore, the assemblage procedure required the painstaking process of fitting together each stave to a unique partner. It literally became a giant surfboard puzzle as it laid on the studio floor enduring weeks of manipulation and fine tuning. As the pieces were assembled in their final position, a custom made bracket was forged for each individual connection on the back. The final piece entailed 285 hours of craftsmanship.
