REDEEMER

$1.00

This sculpture took over 2 years to come together. I found the wood, which was in terrible condition, on a farm. Its uselessness provoked me to find out what beauty could come from these dismally worn, wet pieces. Nevertheless, I couldn't figure out what to do with them; inevitably they ended up on the side of my shop, still useless, for 6 more months. At that time, when I came across them, I finally saw something different about them. I took the pieces and "sewed" them together with old bailing wire. Half satisfied, I just hung the piece up in my shop, and there it stayed empty for about a year.

Then, a friend donated an old rusty steel L-square ruler which I turned into a cross. The cross needed to be mounted onto another piece, but I didn't have anything in mind. Until a few days later, I walked out to my shop and noticed the old wood planks hanging empty on the wall and "POW". I instantly knew that the cross and wood needed to be joined together.

The great part of the story is that when I originally sewed the wood together, it didn't turn out to be very strong. In fact it was quite flimsy, but, just as in our lives, when I connected the cross to the piece, it became strong enough to hold everything together.

I put it aside until I could figure out how to strengthen it enough to make it into something. So as in life; when I connected the cross to it, the wood became strong enough to hold itself and the cross together.
